The bluish tint of the stars in open cluster NGC 3293 indicates that they are still quite young. The color of a star is a direct indicator of its surface temperature: young stars are hotter than older stars, and their light appears blue. Red giant stars, on the other hand, are cooler and have a reddish color. Our Sun, lying between the two extremes, emits a yellow-tinted light.
